2nd December - Romania

This Christmas tradition came from George in Year 6.

Christmas traditions in Romania are rich in cultural and religious significance, blending Christian customs with local folklore. Here are some of the key traditions:

Caroling (Colinde): One of the most cherished Christmas traditions in Romania is caroling. Groups of children and adults visit homes to sing traditional Christmas carols, wishing health and prosperity for the family. The carolers often dress in traditional costumes and may receive gifts such as sweets, fruits, and money.

Christmas Eve (Ajunul Crăciunului): On Christmas Eve, families gather for a festive meal, and many people attend midnight mass at the church. It is also a time for preparing the Christmas tree and decorating the home with special ornaments and lights.

FoodKapama is a traditional and very popular meal for Christmas day. Kapama is a stew made with different types of meat, pickled cabbage, onions, rice, and herbs and spices. Kapama is slow-cooked in a traditional clay pot.

St. Nicholas (Moș Nicolae): On December 6th, children place their boots by the door, hoping that St. Nicholas will visit and fill them with small gifts, sweets, or fruits. If children have been good, they receive presents; if not, they may find a piece of coal or a branch. The Role of the "Moș Crăciun" (Santa Claus): Similar to Western traditions, "Moș Crăciun" delivers gifts to children on Christmas Eve. However, this figure is often portrayed as a benevolent old man who brings joy and surprises to families, blending with the legend of the Christmas spirit. Christmas Traditions in Rural Areas: In some rural parts of Romania, traditional practices like plugusorul (a ritual where young people go from house to house, singing and dancing to bring good luck) and lighting the "fire of Bethlehem" are still performed. These practices are intertwined with pagan customs and local folklore.

Can you guess where we might be going tomorrow?
